Preventative Care - Keeping Your Drains Clean

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

You can avoid a lot of problems by simply paying a bit more attention to how you live in your home. Many problems like clogged drains are mostly avoidable situations. If you have a local .99 cent store or Wall-mart think about paying them a visit. You will want to get a drain strainer for every drain in your home. These will catch the food and hair that can easily clog your drains. This is a simple solution that can save you time and money down the road.

Every four to six weeks place some baking soda and hot water in drains to eradicate build up.

Eco Friendly House cleaning Tips - Cleaning that drain

I have been witting about several ways to clean your drains: This entry is the last in this series, for now! This is the old stand-bye. It works on drains that are slow and not backed up. Pour  half a box of baking soda into your drain. Then pour in about a pint of vinegar. The chemical reaction should help to loosen any build-up in your pipes.

Clogged drains - The water approach

Boiling hot water can be used to clear drains clogged with grease.”This tip requires extreme cautions to avoid injury.” This tips requires a large dose of common sense. Many slow drains have been caused by grease that has hardened. Many chemical drain openers work by creating heat in your pipes. The heat is designed to melt the grease and those clear  your drain.

You will want to start by boiling a small and easy to mange pot of water. The pot should have a long handle which will keep you as far away from the steam as possible. Bring the water to a boil then turn off the heat source. Carefully remove the pot from the stove and slowly pour the water down your drain. This is a preventative measure and will not work on already clogged drains.

Again , remember to use extreme caution here. Do not use a huge pot of water. Use only a small pot of water that can be safely and slowly poured down the drain.  This works best if repeated on a weekly basis.

Clogged drains and easily be prevented: A lot of my house cleaning tips and solutions are based on preventative care. A clogged drain is a good example of this. Preventive cleaning of the household drains starts with reducing what goes into the drain in the first place. Throughout this week I am going to be offering solutions and preventative care tips. Think about this, if only liquids go down your drains then you should not ever have a clogged drain, unless some of that liquid is grease that hardens in your drain. You may also be faced with roots penetrating into your pipes or collapsed pipes. All of these will require professional assistance. The whole idea here is to help move you away from chemical solutions that harm the environment.
