This one involves cleaning chrome: Chrome bathroom fixtures that is. Now, I have known about this tip for a while I just didn’t have anywhere to test it out. There just doesn’t seem to be to many homes in Tucson with chrome bathroom fixtures.
I actually had to place some free online classifieds ads to find someone that would try this for me. Apparent good old kitchen flour can be used to clean up chrome. Just apply the flour, and then rub and scrub a little. Now, all you have to do is rinse, dry, and watch it sparkle… Who knew!

Make your own scouring powder that is Earth and Environmentally safe. You will need the following:

Start by sprinkling the baking soda onto the surface to be cleaned. Now, add a few drops of Murphy’s Oil Soap. You can now begin scrubbing. When done rise. It’s that easy!

I have been witting about several ways to clean your drains: This entry is the last in this series, for now! This is the old stand-bye. It works on drains that are slow and not backed up. Pour half a box of baking soda into your drain. Then pour in about a pint of vinegar. The chemical reaction should help to loosen any build-up in your pipes.

No, tips this time around: Just stories from my life. I stopped by my neighborhood Sunflower Market, much like I do everyday or so. The difference this evening was on the way out a magazine rack caught my eye. I’m here often and had never notice this rack before. As I looked closer, I noticed the word “GREEN” in bold letters. So I picked up a copy for later reading.
I had assumed that it was a Phoenix based zine. However, later, upon closer inspection, I discovered it was Tucson based. Now, I held a copy of a local green publication, the Tucson Green Magizine. Since, I have previously owned an organic plant nursery and currently write a green blog, I had to read more. I even emailed them to say “Hell-o I’m here” and that I would write about them.
Life can be so cool. I had not liked the state of the produce freshness at the store this evening and I headed out the door empty handed and a bite disappointed. That was until I encounter that zine rack which held green resources that are local. I wish them the best. You can visit them at www.tucsongreenzine.com. and tell em Your Fresh Start says, Hell-o.

Boiling hot water can be used to clear drains clogged with grease.”This tip requires extreme cautions to avoid injury.” This tips requires a large dose of common sense. Many slow drains have been caused by grease that has hardened. Many chemical drain openers work by creating heat in your pipes. The heat is designed to melt the grease and those clear your drain.
You will want to start by boiling a small and easy to mange pot of water. The pot should have a long handle which will keep you as far away from the steam as possible. Bring the water to a boil then turn off the heat source. Carefully remove the pot from the stove and slowly pour the water down your drain. This is a preventative measure and will not work on already clogged drains.
Again , remember to use extreme caution here. Do not use a huge pot of water. Use only a small pot of water that can be safely and slowly poured down the drain. This works best if repeated on a weekly basis.

WD-40 to the rescue… I have read about this tips in various different forms over the last few months so I though I would respond. Let say, you accidentally sprayed paint onto your vehicle. Apparently, after it has dried you can use WD-40 to remove it. It will not hurt the underlaying paint job! I am assuming that is because it has been clear coated. Anyone ever try this?

Yesterday I began a discussion about clogged drains. A very large industry is built around this problem. It mostly only offers chemical or mechanical solutions. Preventative care can go a long way to eliminating this as a concern. First you must start by putting in place a plan to avoid clogs to begin with. You absolutely must eliminate grease entering your drains. This is best accomplished by wiping plates and pots with a paper towel. Wipe the surfaces mater and grease into a garbage basket before beginning the washing process. You will also want to drain any grease or oil into a container and seal before disposal. The main idea is to eliminate grease from the drains.

Clogged drains and easily be prevented: A lot of my house cleaning tips and solutions are based on preventative care. A clogged drain is a good example of this. Preventive cleaning of the household drains starts with reducing what goes into the drain in the first place. Throughout this week I am going to be offering solutions and preventative care tips. Think about this, if only liquids go down your drains then you should not ever have a clogged drain, unless some of that liquid is grease that hardens in your drain. You may also be faced with roots penetrating into your pipes or collapsed pipes. All of these will require professional assistance. The whole idea here is to help move you away from chemical solutions that harm the environment.

Where I live in Tucson there little is a chemical company that makes an all purpose cleaner. I like the product because it works and is bio-degradable. However, It is only available locally so I will not bother mentioning it by name. It works especially well on painted surfaces, such as walls. I was hoping that my readers might have some eco and earth friendly house cleaning tips for cleaning walls.
Whatever product you use on painted surfaces you first need to know what kind of paint that you are dealing with prior to using any cleaning product. Different paint will react differently to cleaning solutions. Always test the cleaner in an out of the way location to see if it might cause problems. Also remember you do not need to clean the whole wall only the dirty areas. The exception will be kitchen areas that have grease build-up or rooms where smokers spend lots of time smoking.
So please feel free to comment. This blog gets a fair amount of traffic and you could be helping a lot of people from all over the world. Really! The last time I checked it had visitors from 10 other countries and Alaska and Hawaii. Thanks so very much for visiting.

Cleaning out your vases can be a problem. When vases are not cleaned out properly the water turns sour and nasty. This will destroy the freshness of cut flowers. Since many vases have hard to reach nooks this can pose a problem. Cleaning the gunk out of the bottom of a vase can be tough. Start by getting out all that you can. Then drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets. Now, add hot water. This should do the trick for you. finally rinse out the vase after the bubbles have gone away.

Did you know that you can use tooth paste to clean your silver? Yes, it’s true. Many silver polishes contain lots of nasty stuff that is not Earth friendly. These include petroleum products, ammonia, or other very hazardous ingredients. You might start by dabbing some toothpaste on your silver and rubbing it on with a old clean cloth and then begin polishing. You will want to use warm but not hot rinse water.

I heard about this product, Dryer Balls, a while ago. Then I read about them on someone’s blog. I followed a link to a website but it only offered scant info about the product. They offered two of these balls for $18.00. They said it helped the environment by replacing the need for a dryer sheet with these weird looking balls.
I ask have any of you used this product, if so does it work, and if so how. The product blurb said it worked but never explain how!

This is the, and more… Part! It is truly difficult to come up with fresh earth friendly cleaning tips for the green cleaning crowd. So if you have some tips please let us know. We would love to offer quality tips to our readers.
There have been some changes on this blog. I just upgraded to Word Press version 2.3 and there are some kinks to be worked out. I also added a widget, Called Blog Rush. It is a network of related blogs. The widget gets updated almost in real time. The idea is to create more traffic and offer other related options.
Blog Rush is the big new Buzz in SEO (search engine optimization) circles. So since I also offer search engine optimization services here in Tucson, I thought I would give it a try. I have tried Pay Per Post, as a way to monetize the blog but I have discontinued working with them. If you have a blog then I invite you to consider placing this widget on your blog. Blog Rush is about related blogs connecting together for the benefit of everyone. I will keep you posted on how this works!
